I use drawing (usually with a brush on paper) to explore ideas for paintings and clarify my thinking. I have been working with areas of color made with a loaded brush in a process that defines the colored shape itself and the empty space beside it. Why is all this so compelling? Perhaps the allusiveness of shapes made with a watery, luminous substance, within a play of figure and ground, are in themselves enough to stimulate memory, emotion, and the sensation of freedom.
